Unveiling Color Theory by Birth in Color

The Birth in Color Blog

Richmond, Virginia – Birth in Color is thrilled to unveil β€˜Color Theory,’ an innovative initiative set to redefine the way healthcare industry providers deliver culturally-centered care.

A More Equitable Future

We are Birth in Color, a Virginia-based nonprofit focused on maternal health, reproductive justice, and the celebration of people of color.

We wear many hats - from providing doula training and workshops for new parents seeking support during pregnancy and childbirth, to championing bills that protect families of color in ways that the existing systems have continuously failed to do so.

We envision a world where every birthing person, regardless of their background or circumstances, experiences joy, support, and empowerment throughout their pregnancy and parenthood journeys.

The Genesis of Color Theory

On November 11th, 2023, we celebrated our fifth anniversary. From doulas and doctors to sponsors, local heroes, and friends, we danced and celebrated the legacy and enduring impact of our efforts.

The momentous event left us inspired and looking towards the future. Soon after, our Executive Director, Kenda Sutton-El, found a spark of inspiration and began developing 'Color Theory' - the vibrant brand pillars elevating the redefined ethos of our organization.

The Pillars of 'Color Theory'

At its core, 'Color Theory' emerges as a transformative guide poised to define what it means to provide culturally centered care in the landscapes of maternal, infant care, and healthcare overall. The pillars represented by the acronym C.O.L.O.R. serve as the foundational principles underpinning this initiative.

πŸ…’ - Cultivate Change

Guiding the journey by actively fostering positive transformations in the birthing experience.

πŸ…ž - Observe with Care

Approach each birth with a commitment to keen observation and personalized care tailored to individual needs.

πŸ…› - Listen Actively

Embrace the power of attentive listening, creating a space where every voice is heard and valued.

πŸ…ž - Optimize Outcomes

Elevate every birth by dedicating ourselves to enhancing and ensuring favorable outcomes for mothers and families.

πŸ…‘ - Build Rapport

Forge meaningful connections and trust with mothers and families, laying the foundation for a supportive and empowering experience.

The Journey Ahead

As we step into 2024, we're continuing our efforts to develop 'Color Theory' into a program that fosters connections between healthcare providers and patients.

Kenda Sutton-El has already observed the enthusiasm and excitement generated by 'Color Theory' after sharing the preliminary concept in recent presentations.

"People seem to be excited to learn more and be part of this movement," expressed Kenda Sutton-El. "The support we've received is overwhelming, and it fuels our determination to create lasting change for people of color. [Color Theory] is not just a simple DEI guide, it's a practical approach that can be applied in multiple ways and to various professions. We believe 'Color Theory' is the start of something special for our organization and can’t wait to see how it's applied in the real world."

In the ever-evolving landscape of maternal and infant healthcare, BIC’s 'Color Theory' stands as a beacon of change and empowerment. As we eagerly anticipate the forthcoming phases of our launch, still veiled in anticipation, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who shares our vision for a more equitable future. Whether you are sponsors, doulas, or clients, your unwavering support fuels our commitment to uplift our communities and ensure that others around us are equally inspired to take action.
