Meet the Doula — Cherelle Lewis Seals

We're thrilled to introduce an exciting new series on our Instagram: Meet the Doula!

This is an opportunity for us to celebrate the vibrant work of our doula collective through the eyes of those who tirelessly support our colorful community.

In 2022, Cherelle knew she wanted to make a pivot in her career.

“My sister sent me the training info after having a BIC doula for her second birth. (I had been her unofficial doula in her first birth) I signed up, finished my training and after meeting my first client, I knew I had found my calling.”

Cherelle's immense generosity and desire to contribute to uplifting birth experiences, combined with her recognition of the need for more supportive care in our community, made becoming a doula an obvious decision for her.

Cherelle lives by the mantra of providing families with the support she would desire for her own. This year, her dedication was recognized when she was awarded Outstanding Doula of the Year in the Richmond Cohort, reaffirming that she has indeed chosen the perfect career path.

Every birth journey comes with its set of challenges. One birth comes to mind for Cherelle where she had to remind her client that “no” was a complete sentence and that her decisions regarding her birth were finite.

“Self-advocacy is one of the most important things that I stress to my clients,” Cherelle explains, “making sure they continue to feel safe and heard is my primary goal.”

Cherelle's outlook for the future is filled with optimism and determination. When questioned about her aspirations as a birthworker, Cherelle confidently shares, “I see myself expanding my services to postpartum meals as well as continuing to learn, grow, and hold space for families to come.”

As we embark on this journey of celebrating the remarkable work of our doula collective, we invite you to join us in celebrating the diversity, resilience, and strength of our colorful community!
